February – April: Fresh Green Spring

Spring brings cool and comfortable weather, fresh green rice fields, and blooming flowers. The valleys are peaceful and perfect for cycling, walking, and exploring traditional villages. This is a great time for travelers who prefer pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

May – June: Lush Rice Fields

During May and June, the rice fields become vibrant green, while water-filled paddies can create beautiful reflections across the valleys. The weather becomes warmer and more humid, but the scenery is especially attractive for photography. Pu Luong is also entering one of its rice seasons during this period.

July – August: Green but Rainy

Summer brings heavy rainfall, making the landscapes incredibly green and lush. However, rain can make trekking trails muddy and slippery, so this period is better for travelers who do not mind unpredictable weather.

September – October: Golden Rice Season

For many travelers, this is the best time to visit Mai Chau and Pu Luong. Rice terraces turn golden as the harvest approaches, while cooler and drier weather makes trekking and sightseeing more comfortable. September to early October is especially popular for photography, so booking accommodation in advance is recommended.

November – January: Cool and Peaceful

After the harvest, the valleys become quieter. The weather is cooler and generally drier, making it comfortable for walking and relaxing, although the rice fields are less colorful than during the harvest season.

So, When Should You Go?

For green landscapes, choose May to June. For golden rice terraces and the best overall scenery, September to October is the top choice. If you prefer cool weather and fewer tourists, November to April can be a peaceful alternative.

Whenever you visit, Mai Chau and Pu Luong offer a chance to slow down, explore rural villages, and enjoy a quieter side of northern Vietnam.
